Salzburg backed to overpower inconsistent Pafos

Salzburg host Pafos in the third round of the Europa League early on Friday. Pafos have struggled for consistency and appear inferior to Salzburg in overall strength, making the home side the clear favourites.

Salzburg have extensive European experience, having qualified for continental competition in every season since 2006-07. Last season, they began in the Champions League qualifiers but were eliminated by Club Brugge in the third round. Their subsequent Europa League campaign was also disappointing, with only two wins and six defeats in the league phase, leaving them determined to bounce back this season.

Yorbe Vertessen, Salzburg's leading scorer in last season's Europa League campaign, remains with the squad. Alongside K. Konaté and new signing Masulko, he gives the hosts plenty of attacking firepower. Salzburg have also won two of their last three Europa League home matches, losing the other, while scoring at least twice in each game. Their reliable home attack makes them well placed to take the initiative.

Pafos, by contrast, have played only four Europa League matches in their history, recording one win and three defeats for a 25% win rate. They have scored six goals and conceded 10, highlighting their defensive vulnerability.

Pafos competed in the Champions League last season but failed to win or score in any of their away fixtures during the league phase. Although goals from Gonçalo Guga and David Goldar in the second leg of their Europa League second-round tie forced extra time and ultimately helped them advance, their recent form remains unconvincing.

Across their last four matches in all competitions, Pafos have registered one win and three defeats within regulation time, a 75% loss rate, while conceding six goals. Given their inconsistency, defensive problems and poor away record, Salzburg are strongly fancied to win.
