Thailand Backed to Win Away and Reach the Semi-Finals

The Philippines bounced back quickly after opening with a 4-1 home defeat to Myanmar, beating Laos 4-1 in their last match. Their young midfield unit of Xaviier Mariona, Sandro Reyes, Kairm Rofka and Kenji Nishioka all impressed in that response, and head coach Carles Cuadrat is expected to keep the same lineup against group leaders Thailand.

Thailand have won both of their matches so far and kept clean sheets in each. Captain Sarach Yooyen has been in excellent form, controlling the tempo behind a group of young attackers, while the team's high press and ability to win second balls have also stood out. However, there were some late fitness concerns in the previous game, with several players suffering knocks and cramp.

The Philippines looked much more settled in their second outing than they did in the opener, although a major factor was that Laos had a player sent off after just 14 minutes. Their attacking link-up from midfield into striker Javier Gayoso was clearly more efficient, and they do have the tools to trouble Thailand's back line, especially with Thailand currently not using a specialist holding midfielder.

Thailand still hold the edge in both experience and overall quality. The main question is whether they can sustain their high-intensity style all the way to the final whistle. The transition play from midfield, along with the movement and attacking combinations of Yotsakorn Burapha, Teerasak Poeiphimai and Kakkana Kanyok, should be decisive.

The Philippines will rely on a highly motivated group of young players as they try to pull off an upset against one of the region's stronger sides. But their defensive consistency remains open to doubt, as shown by the space they left at the back against Myanmar in the first match. Thailand are still the clear favourites to take all three points and secure a semi-final place early.

The teams most recently met in the semi-finals of the 2024 ASEAN Championship. The Philippines won the first leg 2-1 at home, but Thailand came back in Bangkok and won the second leg 3-1 after extra time. Before that, the Philippines had never beaten Thailand.
