Goteborg Backed To Rediscover Winning Formula Against Degerfors

Goteborg head into this match after a managerial change and a poor run of form, but they face a Degerfors side that are also struggling badly. With a dominant recent head-to-head record, the hosts are tipped to edge it.

After a miserable first half of the season, Goteborg have finally dismissed head coach Billborn, with assistant coach Bjornloth taking over until the end of the campaign. Winger Kains and midfielder Carlus are both suspended for this match, while Max Fenger missed last week's tough game against Sirius due to illness.

Degerfors also have a suspension issue, with midfielder Sebastian Ohlsson banned for this game. The club have also signed central defender Amit Faqa from AIK Solna, while left-back Mamadou Badjiab was released early by mutual consent.

That proved to be the final straw for the club, who parted company with Billborn. They currently sit 13th in the league and also had to deal with the second leg against FCI Levadia in midweek. At home in the league this season, Goteborg have managed only one win.

Degerfors, meanwhile, went down 1-0 at home to Djurgardens last week. It was their fourth straight defeat and their 10th consecutive league game without a win. They have not won a league match since late April and, after 14 rounds, have dropped into the relegation playoff place, staying just above the bottom three only on goal difference. Looking only at league away form, Degerfors are on a three-match losing run.

Goteborg have not played to their expected level this season, but the managerial change and squad reinforcement could provide the right moment for a response. Facing a struggling Degerfors side looks like timely opposition, and in what should be a fairly close contest, the home win gets the nod.

Head-to-head, Goteborg have won each of their last five meetings with Degerfors. That includes doing the league double over them in both last season and 2023, as well as a 3-1 win in the Swedish Cup in March this year.
