Porto Expected to Shut the Door on a Super Cup Shock

The Portuguese Super Cup gets underway early on Sunday, with Primeira Liga champions Porto taking on Taca de Portugal winners Tondela. On paper, this is a highly uneven matchup. Although Tondela produced a miracle run in the domestic cup, they now appear to have hit their ceiling and are winless in their last three friendlies, leaving them likely to serve as the backdrop to Porto lifting another trophy.

The Super Cup is the first piece of silverware of the new Portuguese season, and both sides head into it eager to strike after the summer break. As the 2025-26 Primeira Liga champions, Porto's quality is beyond doubt. They were outstanding at both ends last season, averaging 1.94 goals scored and just 0.53 conceded per league game. The squad includes attacking threats such as William Gomes and Co Hodi, with Gomes opening the scoring in the recent friendly against Villa. Porto are also the most successful club in Portuguese Super Cup history, having won the competition 24 times, underlining how deeply this trophy is embedded in the club's culture.

By contrast, Tondela are unmistakably the underdogs. The only cup title in their history is the 2025-26 Taca de Portugal. While their cup triumph was a major upset, their route to the title did not include many strong opponents. Before the final, the only Primeira Liga side they faced was struggling Casa Pia in the fifth round, while the final against defending champions Sporting was their first truly major test. Tondela completed a remarkable fairytale run, but facing the league champions now raises a very different question about how much they can really offer in this contest.

There is also a sharp contrast on the touchline. Francesco Farioli is still very young, but he already has more than 200 matches of coaching experience and is regarded as a highly promising manager. He took charge of Porto last summer and improved the club's results across the league, domestic cup and Europa League compared with the previous season, delivering the Primeira Liga title, a Taca de Portugal semi-final and a Europa League quarter-final berth. For most of the campaign he used a 4-3-3 system, and his back four formed the most solid defence in the Portuguese top flight last season.

Trachao is 10 years older than Farioli, yet he has managed only around half as many matches. He joined Tondela in the winter transfer window this year as an emergency appointment, when the team were in the middle of a six-game losing streak in the league. After his arrival, they quickly returned to winning ways and eventually secured an impressive third-place finish in the league.

Among the key players, Co Hodi was instrumental in Porto's return to the league summit. He is the side's midfield fulcrum and makes major contributions at both ends of the pitch. His heat map covers virtually the entire field, reflecting his influence in attack and defence alike, and his average of 3.9 ball recoveries per league game last season was particularly striking. On top of that, his six goals and six assists both ranked among the best in the squad, and he is currently the club's most valuable player.

For Tondela, Damik is the main attacking threat. He averaged only 41 minutes per league appearance last season, yet still produced 1.5 shots per game, showing clear danger in front of goal. He is a well-rounded forward who can finish with either foot, and two of his eight league goals last season came with headers.

In terms of team news, Porto will be without Vasco Sousa and Samu Aghehowa through injury, while Tondela have no absentees reported.
