Gimcheon Sangmu won 1-0 away to Pohang Steelers in their last league match. They were on top for most of the contest and capitalised after Pohang had a player sent off with fewer than 30 minutes remaining in the second half.

FC Seoul drew 0-0 away to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in their previous league outing. They failed to convert their chances but remained solid defensively and kept their opponents from scoring, although they were unable to create enough of an advantage in attack.

Despite the intensity of the match against Jeonbuk, FC Seoul still hold a clear advantage in squad quality. As the league's strongest scoring side, they are backed to take all three points away from home.

In the teams' first meeting of the season, Gimcheon Sangmu earned a 3-2 away victory.
